In this guide
The City employee handbook directs employees to open ESS and use the Finances & Time Tracking tile to review paycheck information. Start at the official Access Boston portal or follow your department’s current Beacon route to ESS. The employee guide lists weekly or biweekly pay depending on job group, and it names Boston Public Schools as an exception to its general prior-period Friday schedule. Use the schedule for your employee group, not a generic citywide assumption.
A quick review begins with the pay period and statement date. Confirm that you are looking at the intended period, then compare the earnings or hours shown with the official schedule and the records your department says control. If the statement is missing, an amount looks wrong, or an expected payment did not arrive, write down the pay period and the precise record issue. Use your department’s authorized payroll or HR channel; an Access Boston sign-in page cannot correct the payroll record.
Find the statement in the correct employee account
Open the City’s official sign-in route and choose the ESS function available to your account. The City handbook calls the route Finances & Time Tracking. Menu names can change, and the employee group or department may determine which links appear. If ESS is not available at all, treat that as an assigned-access question. If ESS opens but a particular pay period is absent, treat it as a record question. The separate access guide maps those two cases.
Use a device and browser appropriate for employee records, and sign out when finished on a shared device. Do not forward an unredacted statement to this publication or include private payroll details in an ordinary editorial email. The guide can point to published instructions; it cannot see whether a specific pay statement exists in your account.

Read the full video explanation
- Open the paycheck task in ESS through an official employee route.
- Confirm the period shown on the paycheck record.
- Compare it with the schedule for your job group; the handbook states that BPS has a different general pay-date rule.
- For a missing or incorrect record, contact department HR through the official route. Keep private statements off this publication.

Read the date and pay period before comparing amounts
A statement usually represents a defined period of work and a specific payment date. Check both labels before comparing it with a deposit or time entry. A deposit may appear in your bank at a different time than an ESS record is posted, and the public handbook does not promise an individual bank’s processing time. If the payment date or pay period seems inconsistent, verify the official payroll calendar and your job group first.
Pay frequency is not identical for every City employee. The handbook says weekly or biweekly frequency depends on job group; its general Friday statement excludes BPS employees. This is a reason to check your own official schedule rather than infer pay timing from a colleague in another unit. A published employee handbook is a starting source; an agreement or department notice can supply a more specific schedule.
What to inspect on the record
- Confirm the employee account and pay period before reading totals.
- Compare the earnings or hours with the schedule and approved time information that applies to your position.
- Review the visible deductions and withholding entries without assuming that the record is personal tax advice.
- Check whether a separate deposit or correction notice explains a delay or adjustment.
- Keep a note of the date and field that appears wrong; do not send an unredacted statement to a public inbox.
The exact labels and lines can vary by pay group. If a field is unclear, ask payroll or HR to interpret that field rather than relying on a generic web explanation. If you are asking about how a withholding choice affects your tax return, use a qualified tax source. The ESS page identifies where certain records are held; it does not tell an employee which election is appropriate.
Route a discrepancy to the record owner
The handbook says employees should review paycheck information regularly and report issues to their department HR. Start with that instruction for an incorrect or missing record. Give the authorized team the pay period, the date you reviewed ESS and a concise description of the mismatch. Use the secure channel it specifies for any employee number, statement or supporting record.
If the statement is present and the problem is only that a bank deposit is not visible, follow your department’s payroll or Treasury guidance. Direct-deposit questions have a separate route described in the deposit guide. If ESS does not load, or the assigned tile is missing, ask the application or IT owner. The difference between a system access issue and a record correction helps prevent a support request from going to the wrong team.
What this guide cannot determine
This page cannot confirm an individual’s pay date, employment classification, time approval, wages, deductions, bank processing or eligibility. The public handbook gives general routes and exceptions; it does not expose a reader’s payroll record. A supervisor, department HR office, payroll team or Treasury contact may be responsible for a particular question. Follow the live official instructions where they are more specific.
If you want the broader task map, return to the Access Boston employee task guide. For a formal HR inquiry rather than a paycheck-record issue, use the Beacon guide.
