If you can sign in to Access Boston but cannot see the ESS tile, treat it first as an application-access question. The City’s Access Boston FAQ, updated October 2, 2023, says that some applications need approval and that tiles can change after a role or department change. Confirm your current assignment with your supervisor, department contact or application owner using the current City process.
If ESS opens but a paycheck, tax form, absence balance or personal field is missing, the application tile is already working. That is a separate record, eligibility or task question. Ask the department team responsible for that record; do not keep filing portal-login tickets when the issue is inside ESS.
First decide whether the tile or the record is missing
| What you observe | Likely next route | What to explain |
|---|---|---|
| ESS tile does not appear after sign-in | Supervisor, department IT or application owner | Which employee task you need and whether your role recently changed |
| ESS opens but a particular record is absent | Department HR, payroll, benefits or time-record team | Record type, year or pay period, and the non-sensitive status shown |
| Access Boston sign-in itself fails | Official Access Boston or department Service/Help Desk | Stage of the sign-in error and device/browser details; keep codes private |
| Beacon opens but an HR inquiry is unresolved | Beacon inquiry status or the HR contact route | Inquiry reference and requested next action |
This distinction matters because an account can be active while an individual application has not been assigned or approved. It also prevents a missing W-2, a time balance question or a benefits detail from being described as an Access Boston outage.
Check whether a role or approval changed
The City FAQ describes tile changes associated with changes to a department or role and notes that certain applications require approval. Its examples are from October 2023, so use them as a routing clue rather than a current access promise. Ask the responsible supervisor or application owner whether ESS is assigned for your current appointment and whether an approval is waiting.
For sponsored accounts, the same FAQ says access may expire or change. If you are not a City payroll employee, ask the sponsoring department to confirm the current account status. Do not borrow a colleague’s account or use an external page that claims to grant access.
Give support a specific, low-risk description
A clear note separates the system symptom from the employee task: “I can open Access Boston but the ESS tile is not listed after my role change” is different from “ESS opens but this year’s tax form is missing.” Add the date, department or role context requested by the official support form. Do not include a password, MFA code, bank details or full tax document in ordinary email.
Use the support channel shown by the City or your department. If the application owner requests additional identity verification, follow the secure steps it provides. This independent publisher cannot verify account eligibility, add an application tile or inspect your employee record.
If the support answer is that ESS is not assigned, ask which role, approval or department record controls the tile. If the answer confirms access but the page remains blank, name that distinction in any follow-up. A single concise report that says whether the app opens can save a second round of questions and route the issue to the right owner.
If the tile returns but the record is still unavailable
Once ESS opens, use the guide for the underlying task. For paycheck information, see paychecks in ESS; for tax forms, see W-2, W-4 and 1095 records; for a time request, see absence requests and balances. Ask the record owner if a specific item is still missing. Access to a system does not guarantee access to every record or action within it.
